Affordable web design Jervis Bay.
When starting his business some years ago, Coastal Concept Electrical had created their website using the Tradify platform. Tradify offers it’s customers a WYSIWYG website builder so their customers can build their own website. Unfortunately, the website wasn’t attracting any enquiries because it wasn’t showing up on Google. They contacted me for advice.
I explained that, if organic search engine optimisation and a top Google ranking was a priority to grow their business, they would need to switch from Tradify to a new WordPress website with a strategic organic SEO. This is one of the most effective ways a small business can position themselves online. Unlike relying on pay-per-click advertising or the uncertainty of social media, they own their new website and can control how it looks, the content contained therein and, most importantly, continue to improve the keyword relevancy for an increasing number of search terms – vastly expanding their online presence at an affordable price.
What is a WYSIWYG website?
A WYSIWYG website refers to a website that is created using a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor. This simple editor allows people who don’t have website design expertise to build web pages in a visual way, without needing to write code. Common WYSIWYG website editors include Wix and SquareSpace.
Limitations of WYSIWYG website builders
While WYSIWYG websites can be a solution for business owners, they do come with several limitations, including:
- Limited customisation and design flexiblity. Using predefined templates, WYSIWYG editors typically use templates, which can limit how much you can modify the design beyond basic adjustments. This makes it difficult to create highly customised or unique layouts.
- While some WYSIWYG builders allow limited code editing, many restrict full access to HTML, CSS, or JavaScript, making advanced customisation difficult.
- WYSIWYG editors often generate messy or bloated code behind the scenes. This can slow down page load times and negatively impact performance, especially when compared to manually coded sites.
- WYSIWYG website editors often have SEO limitations. Poorly optimised code or lack of full control over SEO settings can hurt search engine rankings.
- While most modern WYSIWYG editors offer some level of responsiveness, creating fully optimised, mobile-first designs can be tricky. The automatic scaling may not always work perfectly across all screen sizes and devices.
- If you need complex features like eCommerce, membership systems, or unique integrations, many WYSIWYG platforms can be restrictive. They may not support certain plugins or third-party tools needed for advanced functionality.
- Changes made in the editor don’t always look the same in the final published version, particularly across different browsers. This can lead to extra time spent troubleshooting design issues.
- WYSIWYG website editors are not ideal for large projects. As a website grows in complexity, managing it with a visual editor can become cumbersome, with limited tools for maintaining consistency across large numbers of pages.
- WYSIWYG platforms like Wix or Squarespace lock users into their system. Migrating to another platform or exporting your site can be difficult or impossible without losing data and design elements.
- Some WYSIWYG editors offer a free or low-cost entry, however advanced features or large websites may require expensive monthly subscriptions. Additionally, you might not fully “own” your site if you’re relying on a third-party builder platform.
- With most WYSIWYG builders, you don’t have control over server settings, security configurations, or database management, which can be a drawback for users needing deeper access for performance or security tweaks.
