In December 2022, I completed the web design of a new WordPress website for a small construction equipment hire business based near Nowra on the NSW South Coast.

Little Access Excavations hires excavation and construction equipment to home owners and other small businesses.  They were managing bookings and payments manually however, as the business grew, were finding it difficult to manage the increased paperwork.

The solution was to automate the hiring process with a website featuring an online booking, payment and confirmation system.  To handle all this, I recommended we develop a WordPress website and add the functionality necessary to handle the booking and payments.

WordPress powers approximately 30% of the world’s websites. It is extremely powerful and, importantly, has the flexibility to create sensational looking, mobile-friendly websites on a budget. It’s the perfect solution for a small business website.

Automated Online Booking System

The online booking system was at the centre of the website. The process works as follows:

  • The customer can check the availability of the equipment via an online calendar.
  • The customer then submits a request to book the respective equipment.  This is received immediately by the Little Access Excavation administrative staff who can, with the click of a button, approve / disapprove the booking request.
  • Importantly, the customer must agree to the hire terms and conditions before their booking request is submitted.
  • Once approved by the admin staff, the customer receives an email immediately requesting payment and directing them to the secure payment portal.
  • Once paid, the booking dates appear on the calendar as BOOKED. Until then, the dates appear as pending for 24 hours giving the customer enough time to process their payment.  After 24 hours, if the booking isn’t approved or payment received, the dates revert back to available.
  • If a booking is received over the phone, or a customer requests a repeat hire request, the admin staff can manually submit a booking via the website and block out the respective dates in the calendar. This can be done in under a minute.
  • Via the online booking system, the admin staff can send customers tax invoices.
  • Bookings can be cancelled or amended by the admin team and also customers.
  • Credit card payments are made securely and the ‘money is in the bank’ within a matter of minutes.  There is no waiting for direct bank deposits to clear or time-consuming bank reconciliations.

Best of all, the online booking system offers the flexibility to be adapted to accommodate the unique variables and requirements of any small business.  It is a cost-effective way for small businesses to upgrade from a time consuming, manual booking system to an automated online booking system, saving staff time and streamlining the booking process for both customers and business operators.

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

Another important requirement of this new website development was search engine optimisation for a top Google ranking.

After undertaking extensive keyword research, I created an organic search engine optimisation (SEO) strategy with the goal of targeting Nowra, Ulladulla, Jervis Bay and the Shoalhaven area.
